National Service in Sweden

Swedish National Defence concerns everyone living in Sweden

In Sweden, both women and men are liable for Total Defence Service from the year in which they turn 16 until they turn 70. This applies to all Swedish citizens and everyone living in Sweden, even if they are not Swedish citizens.

Everyone has a duty of service in the event of a crisis or war.

From July 2010 all military training is voluntary – in times of peace.

In times of peace, the most important task of the Swedish Total Defence is to prepare Sweden for a serious crisis or war. Therefore, every year thousands of young persons are trained in the National Defence. Both women and men who are Swedish citizens can apply to do basic training in the Swedish Armed Forces.

If it becomes necessary for Sweden’s defensive preparedness to impose training and compulsory military service, data from the examination of suitability will be used as a basis for drafting and enrolment.
