The National Service Administration requires all Swedish citizens to answer questions in its examination of suitability the year they turn 18. The questions concern matters such as health, operational capability, interests and schooling. According to the law governing national service from July 2010, both men and women are required to answer the questions.
Based on the young persons’ answers, the National Service Administration determines whether they have the necessary qualities to carry out military training and service. The data is registered and stored in the National Service Administration’s information system for two years. If it becomes necessary for Sweden’s defensive preparedness to impose training and compulsory military service or non-combatant service, the data will be used as a basis for drafting and enrolment..
Total Defence Service and the obligation to complete the examination of suitability applies to all Swedes living in Sweden.
